Maharashtra posts 12.6% growth in GST collections, hits ₹2.51 lakh crore in FY26

The Maharashtra State GST Department has reported a strong revenue performance in 2025–26, with total collections from Goods and Services Tax (GST), Value Added Tax (VAT), and Profession Tax (PT) rising 12.6 per cent year-on-year to ₹2,51,256 crore. The government statement said the state retained its position as the top GST revenue generator in the country, with collections more than double those of the second-ranked state. GST alone contributed ₹1,86,991 crore during the year, registering a 14.6 per cent increase over the previous financial year. Key contributor to state revenue “The growth underscores the strength of Maharashtra’s economy and places the state among the fastest-growing in terms of GST revenue, with expansion nearly double the national average. GST, VAT and PT together accounted for around 64 per cent of the state’s own tax revenue, highlighting the central role of the GST department in the state’s fiscal framework,” the government added. Exceeds budget targets The department also exceeded its Budget Estimates (BE) for the fourth consecutive year, achieving 100.2 per cent of its target. Officials attributed the performance to improved compliance and sustained administrative efforts, despite challenges arising from GST rate rationalisation. Data-driven enforcement and compliance push Higher domestic consumption following rate adjustments, along with tighter enforcement, supported the rise in collections. The department has stepped up the use of data-driven feedback systems and advanced analytics to identify tax risks, while increasing scrutiny of high-risk taxpayers, the government’s statement added. At the same time, authorities have continued engagement with compliant taxpayers and maintained a focus on improving the ease of doing business, officials said. Published on April 3, 2026
