Sophie Molineux to lead Australia as Darcie Brown dropped for Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Australia have named Sophie Molineux to lead their Women's T20 World Cup squad after confirming the all-rounder is fit for the 2026 tournament in England, with selectors also springing a surprise by leaving out pace bowler Darcie Brown. Australia have backed captain Sophie Molineux to lead their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign after the all-rounder was declared fit and included in a strong 15-member squad for the 2026 tournament in England, while pace bowler Darcie Brown was left out in one of the biggest selection calls ahead of the competition. The six-time champions, who suffered a shock semi-final exit in the previous edition in 2024, will head into the tournament under a relatively new leadership group led by Molineux, with Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath appointed vice-captains. Australia also handed a maiden ICC tournament call-up to left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton as selectors prioritised variety in pace options for English conditions expected to favour swing and seam movement over outright speed. Molineux’s rise to the captaincy earlier this year came as a surprise to many given the injury setbacks that have repeatedly interrupted her career. The 28-year-old replaced the retired Alyssa Healy in January and has since been tasked with leading Australia into a transition phase while maintaining their dominance in global tournaments. Questions over Molineux’s fitness had emerged ahead of the World Cup after she suffered a back injury before Australia’s tour of the Caribbean. During that series, she featured only as a batter, prompting concerns over whether she would be fit enough to play a full all-round role at the World Cup. Australia national selector Shawn Flegler, however, said the management remained fully confident in both Molineux’s fitness and leadership credentials heading into the tournament. “Sophie has already made her mark as captain and built a strong connection with the group over the last couple of tours, so we're looking forward to seeing what this side can achieve under her leadership,” Flegler said after the squad announcement. The omission of Brown, one of the fastest bowlers in women’s cricket, was the major talking point from the squad reveal. Brown has been a regular feature in Australia’s white-ball plans in recent years, but selectors ultimately opted for a more balanced attack tailored to the expected conditions in England. “Darcie Brown was unlucky to miss out but the decision was based on the conditions we're expecting and the make-up of the side,” Flegler explained. “With at least six right-arm pace options in the mix and raw pace expected to be less effective, we opted to go with Lucy Hamilton who offers something different as a left-arm quick.” Hamilton’s inclusion gives Australia a left-arm seam option alongside an experienced bowling group featuring Megan Schutt, Kim Garth and Alana King. The squad also sees the return of all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Grace Harris, both of whom missed the West Indies tour earlier this year. Their return significantly strengthens Australia’s batting depth and all-round balance heading into the marquee event. Experienced stars Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney continue to form the backbone of the side, while young talents such as Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll add fresh energy to the batting unit. Australia will play warm-up matches against South Africa women's national cricket team, England women's national cricket team and West Indies women's national cricket team before opening their campaign against South Africa at Old Trafford on June 13.
