A man went on a date that had him questioning everything, and no, not because he made a fatal blunder while speaking. Instead, it seems that he “ruined the date” after leaving the fancy restaurant he went to with her leftovers.
TikToker Squash (@squashwinz) posted his most recent dating experience to his platform, with over six million viewers tuning in to hear how the date actually went. Exasperated, he expressed confusion as to how he “ruined the entire night” for her. All he had really done was offer to take her leftovers home after she ordered a $220 entrée that she barely ate. But that had apparently killed the vibe.
Commenters, however, questioned the decision for his potential partner to waste food by leaving it there, adding that they thought he made the right choice.
Squash’s Fancy Date Night Goes Sour
Squash booked a reservation for a “really nice place” that had more expensive offerings. He felt more comfortable doing so as he had just had some major success at his workplace, making him a bit more financially flexible for a more luxurious outing.
There, he met up with a “beautiful girl,” adding that he wasn’t going to think about the price of the bill during the evening. He got assistance from a valet when he arrived and ended up finding his way to his table. When he met up with his date that evening, he ordered them a nice bottle of wine and settled into the experience.
However, his date surprised him almost immediately. They both said they wanted the $35 bolognese or some sort of pasta before a waiter arrived to take their main entrées. When the waiter arrived to take their order, though, she ended up ordering a completely different dish that was more than the entire bill combined—a “surf n’ turf” with a side of caviar.
Panic Sets In
Squash tried to keep calm, but he immediately knew that she had put him in a very weird position by ordering something significantly more expensive than he had. When the entrées did come out, he tried to enjoy his meal. When he glanced at his date, though, he noticed that she had only eaten around three bites of lobster and a bit of caviar.
“ The whole entire dish is sitting in front of her untouched,” Squash said. “ Essentially, I’m a little bit upset. We could have split this at the very least, right? Why did you do a f—— curveball at the very last moment and order the most expensive thing on the menu to not even eat it right?”
So, Squash made a decision in his head to take the meal home with him. That way, he’d at least have some grub the next day after the date. When he did, though, his date’s demeanor completely changed for the worse.
Squash Decides To Take Home The Leftovers
When the server came by to grab their entrées, Squash stopped them and asked if they’d be able to box up her meal. He figured that the full surf and turf was a good meal to go, emphasizing that to the server as they walked by.
As soon as he did, the woman right across the table from him glared at him as though “he killed somebody.”
“ She goes, ‘you’re gonna, you are gonna take these to go, you want to eat, you want to eat leftovers?’ She’s like holding back throw up as she says it,” Squash recalled.
He said yes, reiterating that he wanted to take the leftovers. Then, the next part of the conversation completely surprised him. “ She’s like, ‘I would never eat leftovers. Food is not good the next day… That’s insane. If you’re gonna take that, I’m gonna take myself home.”
The date became tense and awkward at that point. Despite Squash offering to drive her home, the woman refused. She took an Uber instead.
“ I took her to a nice dinner. She ordered the most expensive thing on the menu,” Squash said, baffled. “What didn’t get me a second date was ’cause I took the food home for leftovers.”
Is This A Situation That Warrants Two Checks?
Hundreds of commenters responded to Squash’s post, with more than a few emphasizing how much of an “ick” the woman’s behavior was. After all, she ordered an incredibly expensive dish, only to waste $220 on it and essentially let it go to waste.
Others had a more controversial take—Squash could have asked for separate checks as soon as he realized she wanted him to pay $220 for her meal.
One viewer said, “This is an appropriate two separate checks situation,” which received a number of replies. Some said that Squash would have been right to ask for two checks, while others said it would’ve been incredibly rude for him to do so.
While it’s generally considered socially respectable for a man to pay, it’s also a norm that’s been phased out by some daters. More than ever, it’s become much more common for dates to contribute equally instead of having one person take the bill.
It does seem as though he agreed before the date to take the bill. Generally, though, when someone else is paying, it’s rude to order the most expensive dish on the menu. Across blogs, forums, and courtesy descriptions, hundreds of people have bemoaned infamous orderers who decide to get lavish meals that they don’t end up eating or barely touch. It’s not a good look by any stretch of the imagination.
And while some people might think it’s slightly uncouth to take a date’s leftovers home, it’s also not described with as much disdain as the “ungenerous” act of ordering expensive entrées when someone else is paying.
@squashwinz Am I the bad guy here??
