ASL aircraft crashes in Region 8; GDF launches rescue mission

Latest update April 11th, 2026 12:35 AM Apr 11, 2026 News (Kaieteur News) – An Air Services Limited (ASL) aircraft crashed on Friday in the mountainous and dense Region 8 jungle after taking off from the Mahdia Airstrip. The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in a press statement said that the Cessna single engine aircraft bearing registration number 8R-YAC was enroute to Imbaimadai when it went down. Kaieteur News learnt that the pilot is a Nicaraguan national and was believed to be the only person onboard when it crashed. The GCAA stated that the aircraft departed Madhia at 08:10hrs with one person on board and was due to arrive at Imbaimadai at 08:40hrs”, but it never did. “It failed to report arrival, prompting a flight progress check at 08:44hrs,” the GCAA said while noting that “weather in the area included heavy rainfall and reduced visibility”. A search effort was immediately launched after they could not make contact with the plane. Those efforts, according to the GCAA, later led to the siting by two Trans Guyana Cessna Caravans and a Britten-Norman Islander of a suspected crash site. A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rescue team, including special forces and medical personnel was dispatched to the area. The GCAA informed the press that the situation remains active and “all information is preliminary pending on-site verification”. Meanwhile, the Aviation Operators’ Association of Guyana (AOAG) confirmed that it was aware of the incident, noting that a full air search-and-rescue operation was immediately mounted. The association said private aircraft operators have been assisting national efforts and remain in close communication with the GDF, expressing hope for a successful rescue of the pilot.
