Jordan Spieth made a slow start to the Valero Texas Open on Thursday, shooting a round of one-under-par 71. Spieth is currently sitting five shots adrift of the leaders after the opening round of the Valero Texas Open. The 32-year-old from Dallas was nowhere near his best, but he’ll be proud of himself that he still managed to shoot under par. Spieth is one of the most entertaining players on the PGA Tour and he provided plenty of excitement for the fans on Thursday at TPC San Antonio. Despite the fact that he hasn’t won since 2022, Spieth is being backed to contend at The Masters next week. However, if he is going to do that, he will need to sharpen up certain aspects of his game before he tees it up at Augusta National. Rich Beem has always been desperate for his fellow Texan to do well. Beem actually advised Spieth to make a change in the coaching department in 2025 after suggesting that some fresh ideas could be required. However, the three-time major champion is still with his long-time coach, Cameron McCormick. Beem was following Spieth around the course on day one of the Valero Texas Open on Thursday and he noticed something about the 32-year-old’s game that simply didn’t look right. “I’ve noticed something,“ Beem said. “His left shoulder seems to have gotten more and more down below his right shoulder. “You always want to keep your shoulders level, but I think his left shoulder has gotten way down, almost like he hits down on it instead of up and through it.” Beem’s co-commentator, Andrew Coltart, completely agreed with the 2002 PGA Championship winner’s stance. “That’s a terrific point,“ Coltart said. “Yeah, obviously the left hand below right, it lowers the left shoulder, but as Rich says, it should just be level, not tilted the wrong way around.“ Beem’s observation about Spieth’s putting style was absolutely spot on. His performance on the greens at TPC San Antonio on Thursday was quite frankly abysmal. Spieth lost an astonishing 3.127 strokes to the field putting on day one.
