IndiGo Doubles Down on Fuel Surcharges During Iran War

Now that IndiGo has significantly hiked its fuel surcharges, will Air India follow suit? Air India’s still-unannounced Phase 3 Far East surcharge will likely reflect the new, higher benchmark.
IndiGo is hiking fuel surcharges for the second time since the Iran war broke out. Effective April 2, some charges will rise as much as fivefold for some international routes.
“For international operations, ATF prices have more than doubled in the last month, consequentially driving a significant impact on the airline’s operating costs on these routes,” the carrier said in a statement.
On March 14, IndiGo announced a range of surcharges for all flights, some based on mileage, in response to oil supply disruptions driven by the Iran war. IndiGo noted at the time that ATF “represents a significant share of airlines’ operating cost.”
